Dr. Jens Appel

After finishing as biochemist at the University of Tübingen I changed in 1995 to the University of Marburg into the group of Professor Senger to start working on the cyanobacterial bidirectional hydrogenase as a Ph.D. student. After eight years at the University of Kiel and I was appointed as assistant professor at Arizona State University. Working in the US was a great experience but after two years I had to move back to Germany because of family matters. In the turn of this change I did not get the chance to continue working on cyanobacterial hydrogen metabolism and instead had to work as a teacher for chemistry and biology. In 2017 I got the chance to participate in a new BMBF funded project led by Kirstin Gutekunst with the aim to fuse the cyanobacterial hydrogenase to photosystem I. Since then, I am very lucky to be part of this exciting endeavour and in 2022 changed to the University of Kassel with her group.
