Heidelberg Technology Park: Space for innovation

Technologiepark Heidelberg GmbH, a subsidiary of the municipality of Heidelberg and the Rhine Neckar Chamber of Industry and Commerce, has been established in six locations since 1984, seeking to integrate scientific research and applied development in collaboration with its global network. Its goal is to help scientific companies develop new products.

As the seat of Heidelberg Startup Partner e.V., the technology park fosters technology and knowledge-based spin-offs and start-ups. Two accelerator programs offered by the state of Baden Württemberg assist start-ups in making a successful market entry: the Life Science Accelerator Baden Württemberg caters to start-ups and spin-offs in the life sciences focusing on biotechnology, medical technology, and digital healthcare; and the Up2B Accelerator is the point of contact for IT start-ups specializing in the corporate client (B2B) segment.

Space for innovation: The newly established Business Development Center Heidelberg (BDC HD) has been providing young companies with the space they need since October 2019. This facility of the technology park consists of around 4,400 square meters of rental space: laboratories, which account for almost half the area, can be converted into BSL-2 wet labs or clean rooms; flexible areas for offices and workshops; and additionally, tenants have access to a conference center, two co-working spaces, and a cafeteria. As of April 2020, the BDC HD will also include the Kurpfalz AI lab, which will give SMEs easier access to innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Heidelberg Startup Partners e.V.

Heidelberg Startup Partners e.V. supports start-up projects in the life sciences, biotechnology, IT, and other technological and knowledge-based sectors. The interdisciplinary team assists both founders and prospective founders in every phase of the start-up process, from developing the business model, applying for public funding, and searching for financing options, to establishing offices in Heidelberg. In addition to personal advice and support, we make two accelerator programs accessible to young companies:

  • the Life Science Accelerator Baden Württemberg helps life science start-ups make a quicker successful market entry; and
  • the Up2B Accelerator assists IT companies specializing in the corporate client (B2B) segment.

Regular events with industry experts and the opportunity to network enable founders to extend their business and sectoral competencies, and build a professional network. We also help start-ups find suitable premises. In fact, the Business Development Center Heidelberg (BDC HD), a new building at the Heidelberg Technology Park, has been providing reasonably priced space for this purpose since October 2019. Flexible office and laboratory spaces as well as two co-working areas are available for tenants. And as of April 2020, there will also be the Kurpfalz AI lab, which will give SMEs easier access to innovative artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Heidelberg Startup Partners is a joint initiative of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Rhine Neckar Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Heidelberg University of Education, SRH Hochschule Heidelberg gGmbH, technology transfer heidelberg GmbH, the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University, and Heidelberg University.
